Job Purpose

Perform current business architecture to execute purchases, sales of petroleum products, feedstock, blend stock, and seek opportunities to optimise profitability, add value, build optimisation around the existing business and provide integration and alignment where multiple stakeholders are involved in realising a business opportunity in trading deals in accordance with statutory and PetroSA’s policies and procedures to ensure profitability is optimised and value added to the organisation.

Job Description

  • Execute the purchasing and sales function/ process by being actively present in the market, using postulates to perform analysis, develop demand and supply scenarios, execute physical crude oil, product and derivative trades, and assist with the execution of trading operations and reporting, ensuring a positive contribution for trading deal outcomes including optimisation opportunities for refinery or assets belonging to the organisation, and building sound relationships with counterparties to ensure sustainability is offered through profitable growth and the reduction of feedstock costs.
  • Design and execute business solutions for optimisation of overland trading and third-party trading to ensure optimum margins are derived and to seek opportunities for profit generation associated with overland and third-party trading.
  • Execute the price risk function/ process by assisting with trade reconciliation and broker validation, establish trading solutions ensuring risk levels are within allowable limits, and that a clear link for physical and paper positions exist for all new business architecture, to ensure risk exposure is mitigated and business targets are met. 
  • Design and execute business solutions for optimisation of strategic stock directives for the strategic stock trading function/ process to ensure optimum margins are derived from stock holdings and to seek opportunities for profit generation associated with strategic stock.
  • Execute the supplier management function/process by communicating factors that might impact PetroSA’s business and identify possible opportunities that can be further explored by the rest of PetroSA to ensure protection against reputational risk and for the identification of profitable growth opportunities.
  • Maintain existing relationships/ partnerships and identify business threats and strengths that could impact PetroSA, analyse external global market/ external environmental factors and benchmarking for specific business opportunities to evaluate the best outcome and fit with existing business to ensure market opportunities are identified, sustainable partnerships and business solutions, embeddedness in the market and PetroSA’s reputation is maintained as a professional organisation with a high level of integrity.  
  • Develop and maintain an ongoing understanding of trading related standards for ports, facilities, and pipelines, implement policy directives, formulate procedures for approval and  utilise the delegation of authority limits for deals in accordance with PetroSA’s policies and procedures to ensure good corporate governance in the trading department, and compliance to current policy directives and applicable legislations.
  • Assist with the development of service level agreements with internal stakeholders which are reviewed on a regular basis, set performance criteria critical to the service level requirements in compliance to policies and procedures to ensure service delivery standards are maintained and improved.
  • Perform risk management by hedging physical oil exposures, implementing price risk management policies, and manage open positions by using approved financial instruments to ensure the best price is achieved, profitable transactions and all market positions are covered.
  • Manage and ensure that business propriety systems can be utilised for new business opportunities, and develop sets of requirements for system upgrades that would be developed for future use, to ensure effective financial reporting and existing business processes are updated before projects/ opportunities are implemented.
  • Maintain OPEX budget targets relating to specific existing and new deals to ensure elements that show a high level of variance are corrected.
  • Provide and ensure trading gives customers the required information to ensure physical deals can be executed within the required time periods.
  • Assist in new business development within other divisions in PetroSA specifically related to supply chain optimisation or integration of new products and new markets to ensure alignment of business drivers.
  • Provide coaching and guidance to trainee traders to ensure knowledge transfer and capability development 

Requirements & Qualifications

Minimum qualifications:

  • Advanced Diploma (NQF Lev7)/Bachelor’s degree in Business/Finance/Commerce/Economics/Engineering/Science

Minimum work experience:

  • 3 - 5 years’ experience within the supply and trading environment in the Petrochemical Industry/or commodity banking
  • Trading Operations and Overland experience will be an added advantage
